How to become a Florida Resident?

Is there a way I can become a resident of Florida while maintaining my residency in Texas?

  • I am doing a masters program at a medical school in Florida. I began living here in August 2010. My program will end in August 2011 and I'll start applying to medical schools in May 2011. I haven't started a job here but I want to and am looking for one. Part of me feels like I might have a better chance of getting into the medical school I am currently enrolled in so I was thinking about establishing residency here but I don't want to lose my residency in Texas in case I get into a school there because technically that would be my first choice. Is there some way I could begin the process of becoming a Florida resident but still be able to keep Texas residency just in case and not go through with becoming a Florida resident last minute if need be? I know this is technically not allowed...but is there really no grace period of some sort or way around it?

  • Answer:

No, no way around it... and if you try, you'll will guarantee you won't be considered a resident of EITHER state. Kinda sad to see the look on someones face when THAT happens.... don't do it. You will always be considered an out-of-state student in Florida. You have applied for admission while you are a current student... that is enough to ALWAYS keep you an out of state student... even if you don't end up going right away.
