Where should I go to college?

Got my Pell Grant, now where do I go? Trouble finding a college!?

  • I was approved for a Pell Grant, but I'm lost now as to where I should go and what I should do. Here's my story. I am working toward starting my own event planning business. I don't really want to go for a degree program, I would actually just prefer to take some business classes, maybe some Marketing, and definitely an event management certification course. I work full time, so I will need to take online courses. I am having trouble finding a school! I'm in Northern CA (Stockton). To save money and be approved for the BOG grant, I applied to a community college. This college was in Southern CA and they had really great online courses that I wanted to take. They ended up saying that I still had to come in to take placement testing. Ugh! I can't even go into my own community college because I take the train to work and am gone from 4am til 7pm everyday. So... I'm looking for a college that offers online courses for what I'm looking for, doesn't require me to come in to register, and is also affordable and accepts Pell Grants and financial aid. Can someone please help? I added about 6 or 7 colleges to my FAFSA and none of them have worked out. UGH! I just want to get the ball rolling before I give up on this idea and go into business without the proper preparations and skills.... I'm so frustrated. Please help.. and please don't riddle me with spam. I do not need a loan, I already am approved for one. Thanks!

It is not unreasonable for you to work full-time and go to school full-time -- that's stupid for someone to make that comment. Can you take an afternoon off in order to register and take your placement tests? Most people have vacation time or personal time, or perhaps you can work late one day or go in on a weekend to make up the time. You will have to make some sacrifices and I don't know of any community colleges that allow you to complete everything online in CA. I know of a few solely online programs in other states, but you would then lose your state aid and some of these are pretty pricey private schools - not the best option for what you're looking for. Find out if there's any way that you could go in on a weekend to take the placement tests (if those are your days off) -- but if not, I would simply take a day off work (you can't tell me that you work 365 days a year with no days off).

You really need to prioritize and do some time management. If you are tied up from 4AM to 7PM every day, you don't have enough time to make this work. That's a 15 hour workday. Adding class time, reading, and homework to that schedule would seem a futile gesture.

Did you take the SAT or ACT? If so, then you can send the results of that test to the community college, and they'll accept them instead of having you take their placement test. All ccs will want placement tests, and they expect you to take the day off from work in order to take their tests. If you can't do that, then you can't go to a cc. You may be able to go to a Cal State, though: http://odp.csusuccess.org/ That's a link to all the online courses in the Cal State system. See if that might work for you.

None of them are "working out" because you're wanting to do something that not only isn't practical, but isn't done - you can't just make up a degree path, along with your multitude of limiting parameters, and expect them to work out. Additional Details: No - what's unreasonable is for you to make stuff up, choose degree or certificate paths that are unrecognized, and expect that the government is going to pay for your foolish whims. ADDITIONAL Details: Yes, foolish whims. The things you're suggesting are like the whimsical wishes of a child. Good, you want to better yourself - but if you're going to do as such you have to come to grips with how things work in the adult/real world, and frankly, by this point in your life you are old enough to know better. Online colleges are FAKE/PRETEND colleges, EVERYBODY knows this - and the reason you're having trouble making your "whims" work out is that your expectations are unrealisitic - and it's also why you'll find no employment relative to any so-called certification programs. LOL
