What are some good scholarships?

What are some good sites/books to find scholarships?

  • Hello, does anyone know any good websites where you can input your information and be matched up with scholarships? Or any good general scholarship directories I can borrow from a library? So far I've taken a look at CollegeBoard.com and fastweb.com...

  • Answer:

The College Board Scholarship Search is an excellent one. I'm glad you have looked at it. For one thing, if you choose to register (free) so you may return to your search strategy later on and modify it, you will not get spam email. * http://apps.collegeboard.org/cbsearch_ss/welcome.jsp Click on the Start link in the middle of the text. A number of other scholarship web sites will require registration and you will receive a lot of spam. Plus, some of the so-called "scholarship" web sites have a lot of contests, not scholarships. There may be locally funded scholarships just for students graduating from your high school. Be sure to ask a HS guidance counselor about any for which you may qualify. Plus, many locally funded community colleges, state funded colleges/universities, and private/independent colleges and universities (not to be confused with for-profit/career/proprietary colleges) offer scholarships to some of their own students. Be sure to check the Financial Aid web pages of the schools that interest you. Or, you can talk (by phone or in-person) with a financial aid counselor at the schools to which you have applied/will apply. Be aware that the deadline for applications for some scholarships at some schools may have already passed or may be coming up soon. If you telephone or go to a campus to speak with a FA counselor, many college/university campuses may be closed over the Christmas break and not re-open until Jan. 3, 2012. (I think Jan. 2 will be considered a paid college/univ. employee holiday because Jan. 1, New Year's Day, is on a Sun. this year.) If you go to your local public library or high school library, a librarian there can help you find some good recent books listing scholarships and giving tips on how to apply for and win scholarships. To give you a start, here are a few recent titles: Title: Getting financial aid 2012. 6th edition Author: College Entrance Examination Board. Publisher: New York : College Board : Distributed by Macmillan, 2011. Includes more than just info on scholarships. Title: Scholarship handbook 2012, 15th edition Author: College Entrance Examination Board. Publisher: New York : College Board : Distributed by Macmillan, 2011. Title: Scholarships, Grants & Prizes 2012. Publisher: Petersons 2011 Source: WorldCat.org - http://www.worldcat.org - a database of library holdings worldwide Librarians--Ask Us, We Answer!
