How much is the average college tuition?

How much should parents help pay for college tuition and the college expenses?

  • I'm a senior IE at Bradley university and I come from a single parent home where I have an older sister who is in graduate school. My Dad makes about 100 thousand annually and for what ever reason he has chosen to not help me pay for any college. I take out a large private loan from a bank every year and then I also get a few grants from the university and some small federal loans. But should my Dad pay for groceries? Books? gas? Rent? I have had to get a job and for my sophomore year I got two jobs to pay for college but I feel like my dad could easily give me $100-$300 per month to pay some things because I pay for everything else and sometimes I need help. I asked him about it and he said because he doesn't have the money. I don't believe him though...am I being dramatic?

  • Answer:

Here is the thing: once you are over 18 your parents don't owe you anything anymore. They legally don't have to help you at all. It would be nice if he would help you just because he is obviously very well off financially. How much help a parent gives their children in college varies greatly. Some are lucky enough to have everything paid for by their parents including housing, groceries, insurance and the gas in the cars. Some kids are totally on their own. Without knowing you and your family it is hard for me to really judge the situation.
