How can I get money for college?

How can I get loan money to go to school without going through the financial aid office at my college?

  • Ok so i am in a situation here because me and my dad do not get along and hes crazy ok. I know everyone out there thinks there parents are crazy too but my dad is mean and controlling and doesnt let me do what i want to do and im not a bad kid i do nothing wrong but i just want to live on campus. I need loan money to do that. My dad works at the college i go to and i get free tuition because of this but he got mad at me and now we dont talk and he is going to take away my free tutition and i have to get loan money now to continue going to school and he is in charge of the financial aid at the school so i dont know if he can deny me loan money or what but im only eligable for about 7500 anyway through the college so i would need more for tutition and room and board and stuff. My question is simple.... Where can i get loans to go to school without going through financial aid at my college? (so many kids get finaicial aid but are only eligable for so much so isnt there other places they get loan money?) are there any websites where i can get loans and get money to go to school like goverment loans or whatever? i know ill probably need a co signer but my mom could help me with that if anyone has any information on any of this please help me cause i really need help please and thank you in advance

The other posters are right in that your dad can't deny you financial aid if you qualify, and that he can't take away your right to the tuition waiver. You can always fill out a FASFA if you're worried about it, and if for some reason the school can and will actually charge you, I'd go to a different University. Also, some things the others didn't mention, you don't HAVE to have a cosigner for student loans, but you can I never have. The second thing is that when Obama care got passed there was a rider tacked on to it that says all student loans basically have to be run through the government. The government chooses the lender etc but the government can hold you liable for the payback. So there are no more private student loans. The FASFA should be all you need to fill out to get your financial aid taken care of. Good Luck!

You dad cannot withhold your federal financial aid just because he works at the college. Also, unless he quits his job, you have a right to the tuition waiver. Most loan providers need you to go through the financial aid office because they are only legally allowed to loan you enough to cover your tuition, fees, and related expenses. The amount they are legally allowed to loan you is made by the school and includes tuition, room & board, fees, books, travel, personal expenses, etc. It's usually 3-4X the amount of tuition. To be eligible for federal loans or grants, you MUST file the FAFSA and go through your financial aid office. There is no other way. The federal government has to protect itself and follows strict policies. Again, your father can go to jail if he interferes with your federal financial aid as it is a felony. No one is "in charge" of financial aid at your school as it is all controlled by the federal government. You can take out private loans, but they will work with the financial aid office at your school to determine how much you are allowed to take out. They will also send the money to the aid office to cover expenses. You will need a co-signer for private loans, so you have that covered. Private loans should be a last resort as they have higher interest rates and some do not defer until you graduate.

if you have a bank account you can see if your bank does student loans

Top Weasel is right.. but you can also try different banks that offer student assistance with college. Just check with some local banks in your area and compare the best ones. But don't forget you have to pay back any loan you get. Also don't hesitate to apply for grants and scholarships. Grant we all know don't have to be paid back and there are plenty of scholarships out there that will help you with funds for books, dorms fees, ect. So start applying now for that....that money can go towards anything you need. But your dad is being a prune face and he can't make you start paying for school... parents do things and say things to scare us. But you are in college now, so now this is the time you take matters in your own hands and be an adult.

Top Weasel is right on. Check out https://studentloans.gov for more info. Also, check out http://www2.ed.gov/offices/OSFAP/DirectLoan/applying.html for Federal Loan Limits. You'd need to make up the rest with private loans (bank or credit card co) or your Mom could take out a Plus Loan.
