What is my degree in?

FAFSA for Pre-Pharmacy. What degree am I working on?

  • I am going to a university and majoring in Pre-Pharmacy. The way this works is, I go to school for two to three years to complete my prerequisites for pharmacy school, then I apply to a pharmacy school, where I study for four more years to obtain my PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy). I never get a bachelors degree. Below is the question on the FAFSA and it's answers. When you begin the 2012-2013 school year, what degree or certificate will you be working on? 1st bachelor's degree 2nd bachelor's degree Associate degree (occupational or technical program) Associate degree (general education/transfer program) Certificate/diploma (occupational/technical/education program of less than 2 yr.) Certificate/diploma (occupational/technical/education program of at least 2 yr.) Teacher credential program (non-degree program) Graduate/professional degree Other/undecided

  • Answer:

I guess you can just put "other/undecided" because pre-pharmacy is not really any of the other ones. Its just a bunch of classes. Since you are already going to spend at least 2 years taking those classes, why not just go all the way and get your bachelors degree? You would almost be there anyways. Plus, many pharmacy schools strongly prefer that you have completed a bachelors degree by the start of your admission term and some schools like University of Southern California even require it. Having a bachelors is a really big boost.

Other answers

Until you start your pharmacy classes, you are considered to be an undergrad. You'll put down 1st bachelors degree. When you start pharmacy, you can put down graduate/professional degree. If I recall that school does not have such a stellar reputation.
