How does Independent study work?

How does the College Federal Work Study work in terms of how much money you get to keep idk im just confused?

  • so im starting my freshman year at a university and as part of my financial aid package i accepted a work study program. i know i have to get a job and stuff i know the general concept of it but my question is the payment.. how does it being a work-study program affect the payment... do i get all the money i work for and i can spend it as i like (like a regular job) or does it go to my student account on campus???

  • Answer:

You receive and keep the money like a regular job. You should check to see what the pay period is as far as weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. You should talk to a financial aid officer at your school for more information/clarification. Good luck!!

You will need to check at the fin aid office, but generally work study is paid to you monthly or bi-weekly just like a regular job after you work the hours. It's usually given to you in the form of a check... and you can spend it as you like. Tip: competition is usually fierce for work studies, especially as a freshman... don't wait. As soon as you get on campus go directly to the fin aid office (or sometimes the jobs are posted on the schools website) to get a list of openings. Sometimes there is no central location for openings and you just have to go from office to office and ask. Many freshman accept work study, but never actually find a work study job so they don't get to earn that money. Good Luck.

if you owe on your tuition you can choose for the school to keep you work-study checks as payment on your tuition or you can keep the checks like a regular job if you don't owe anything.
