Native American scholarships?

I Have a Question About Native American College Scholarships?

  • If my great great great grandmother was 100% Cherokee Indian, am I eligible for any Native American related college scholarships? Have have Comanche Relatives on my mothers side as well.

  • Answer:

Unless YOU are enrolled in a tribe, no you are not eligible. If gggggrandma was enrolled, she'd be eligible. When the family stopped being associated (enrolled) with the tribe is when eligibility also stopped. Same with your Comanche relatives, if they are enrolled then they are eligible. If you are not enrolled, you are not eligilble. A tribal enrollment document with your name on it would be required. It's all about tribal enrollment, not just ancestry.

If you were enrolled in your tribe, you'd ask the tribal office if you qualified for any scholarships they offer. Since scholarships are given by the tribe (not the government) they give them to those tribal members who are versed in the culture and language of the tribe, and who meet other requirements. Since you are not, the answer is no. I am very disappointed when people only decide to research their distant native american ancestors when they think there might be financial benefit to doing so. Knowing that native american tribes are the poorest people in america, it is sad that no one ever thinks of asking how they can help benefit their tribe. It is a very selfish attitude.

Cherokee, Cherokee Cherokee! Always Cherokee. Very few White and Black american that DON'T make this claim nowadays. And even fewer have actual proof of this legitimate ancestry. Usually it is nothing more than a myth. And if you aren't enrolled you aren't Cherokee, nor are you eligible for a tribal scholarship (because you are not tribal). These Cherokee blood myths are getting ridiculous! And by the way, you think if you have a great great great grandmother that was Black and all other family lines was non-Black that you could get a scholarship as an "African American?" (e.g. the United N3gr0 College fund?) Heck no!
