How much native american blood do you have?

How can i get a grant or a scholarship for having native american blood?

  • My great grandfather is full blood native american which makes me 1/8 native american blood (4th Descendant)

  • Answer:

You apply directly with the tribe you belong to. If you are not a recognized member you are not entitled to a grant. The federal government stays out and lets the tribes completely manage all of their grant funds themselves.

The only way you will be able to get one is if you are registered with you're ggf's band, because you will have to present proof of your Indian status to whom ever is handing out the scholarship. If you aren't a registered Native American then you will have to contact your band and ask them for help. Most likely you will have to provide them with proof of descent before they will give you Indian status.

First, understand that scholarships and other funding opportunities for American Indian people are not based on "blood" but on CITIZENSHIP in a tribal nation. There are many people like you with "Indian blood" but your "Indian blood" won't get you anything without tribal enrollment, ie citizenship. If you are enrolled, contact your tribe of enrollment to inquire about funding. If you are looking at non-tribal sources for funding, be sure to include a copy of your tribal enrollment documents. If you aren't enrolled you're best bet is to look elsewhere...

Most tribes only take those with 1/4th or higher. Along with that the federals won't start throwing money at you just because your legally an indian. That also comes from the tribes. Scholarships don't come free as well, you'll have to work for those. All in all it depends what tribe your claiming. http://www.interior.gov/benefits.html

Well, when you find out let me know because I had to work two full time jobs to pay for my OWN tuition. There aren't any fractions to my blood. I got a small scholarship, but in the normal way: I EARNED IT by getting a perfect score on my SAT's and being the salutatorian of my class. Even that only paid for the first two years. I still had to pay for my books, and if I so chose to live on campus, my room and board. The last four years, I had to pay for EVERYTHING myself. And yes, that would be six years total, I am an ACNP - one skip away from being a doctor - which would take another three to six years depending on what specialty I choose to follow (and I intend to follow through). So if you are 1/8, not affiliated with any nation, not enrolled, and have no ties to your culture or heritage, and still get a free ride just for claiming to have "some" Native blood, please, please let me know how.
