How do I defer student loan?

How to Defer Student Loans(Stafford Loan) in Florida?

  • So even though I had outside financial aid, I still ended up having to get student loans for rent and tuition etc. I have the subsidized and unsubsidized stafford loans and I remember signing up for them for my school through Suntrust. Anyways, I had to withdraw due to family issues during the spring. I signed up for a summer class and they told me after the drop/add period that my fin aid would not cover the class, so I told them I couldn't pay for class and they told me I had to withdraw from the school in order to drop it. Well they didn't tell me that, that would make my student loans active and now I have to start paying them back in January, which I found out a little over a month ago. haha and I'm changing schools because they've messed up my fin aid multiple times and had to fix it last minute...soo yeah..I'm going to school right now(Fall) and at a different school fulltime in the spring for the next 1-2 years for nursing. So I'm hoping I can get it deferred because I changed majors. I looked on my school site and it gave me the number for the FDLP, but I'm not sure who I can call to see if I can get the payments deferred. I'm unemployed and trying to get my cna and then nursing cert. so I can get a job easier. So I know I will not be able to pay off the loans just yet and I'm not sure what else to do. I just want to know who to call in order to apply to get the loans deferred because I only have 2 months and I don't want to mess up my credit with these loans. I'm going to call the FDLP but I'm wondering if I should call Suntrust somehow because I'm not sure where to get the papers from or if I can do it online. Thanks~

  • Answer:

Suntrust doesn't have your loans anymore- they were purchased by the department of education. you don't need to contact them. you need to find out who is servicing your loans (fdlp should be able to find out when you call them) and contact your loan servicer to get the deferment. if you are in school at least half time you should be able to defer your loans based off of your current enrollment information.
