How can file as an independent for student aid and such?

  • My parents are not paying any money towards my tuition, I do not live there any longer. I have my drivers license and I registered to vote in another state. How can I file as an independent?

    You can't. Turn 24, get married, have kids, or join the military & then you can file as an independent.

Living on your own without your parents' contributions does not make a student independent for financial aid purposes. You must be able to answer "yes" to one of the dependency status questions. So, you'll need to be 24, married, have a child of you own, in the army, or already hold a bachelor's degree to be independent for financial aid.
