How can I get money for college?

UK: How can I get money after this year of college?

  • I am currently attending college and hope to be doing A-Levels next year. Even if they didn't stop EMA, I would no longer get it due to starting at the age of 19. I would love nothing more than being able to work while I study but due to unemployment sky rocketing up and the availability of part time jobs decreasing into hell, I'm finding it extremely hard to find work now. So, next year, I'll have absolutely no income, my whole family lives off the state (My mother gets JSA and my brother gets DLA along with ESA, although he doesn't live in my house). Am I able to sign onto JSA for the summer holidays between the time I leave college and then start again in September? While I'm at college, what way is there for me to get money? Are there are benefits that I can claim? It's hard to live off the money we have now and as I've said, I would love to go out and earn my money but I need to have some money from somewhere; even if it's just £30. Anyway, thanks for all answers on topic about what benefits I can claim and any answers wishing me luck in getting a job will immediately get 10 points from my gratitude inside my mind (Unfortunately, not on Y! Answers).

  • Answer:

If you are studying A-Levels you will not be entitled to any benefits like JSA or IS but may be able to get adult learners grant, tuitition fee loans or maintainence grants so speak to the college and ask for advice about financial assistance. I don't believe you can claim JSA between college years but you can confirm this by contacting the benefits helpline. My best advice is to find a saturday job which a lot of people do. I had one at 6th form and earned about £40 I think. That would be enough for you to feed yourself while living at home.

The answer to your question is -f/t students do not qualify for benefits you either work p/t at weekends and evenings or take on a student loan You need to try harder to find p/t work, try pubs, clubs, supermarkets or indeed any retail store or coffee shops I have 3 young adults sons and all had p/t work by age 16 while at school and University Off course I know what the job situation is, as 2 of my sons have had periods on JSA after leaving University. So the bottom line is either find p/t work or get a student loan to survive
