How do I find out how much I owe in student loans?

Can i go back to college if i still owe student loans?

  • I got my bs last year in criminal justice online and cannot find a job. i want to go back to school to become a teacher but i still owe student loans because i haven't found a job! can i still get loans to go to school again??

  • Answer:

Yes, as long as: 1) You aren't in default on any student loans. If you default, you automatically lose eligibility for any federal aid. 2) You haven't reached the aggregate loan limit for Stafford Loans. Undergrad students can borrow a maximum of $31,000 if a dependent student, or $57,500 if an independent student. You won't be able to qualify for any federal grants because you already have a bachelor's, but there may be state or institutional grants available. Definitely check with your school's financial aid office, and they should be able to help!

Forgive me for raining on your parade but why would you want to go into teaching? A noble profession... no question. But you can't your bills with it. (If you could I'd be a teacher myself) :)

There's a limit as to how much you can take out in federal loans per degree, but if you're going for a new degree now (a Masters?) that won't be an issue. Private student loans don't have any of those limits, so you can also apply there if you don't get enough federal loans. Your loans from undergrad will go into deferment (so they'll accumulate interest, but you won't need to make payments) if you go back to school full time. This is all assuming that you've been making any necessary payments on the loans you took out so far. If you stopped paying those, then you'll have more trouble taking out new ones.

You won't qualify for federal loans unless you enroll in a graduate program because you already have a BS degree. However, you could still be eligible for private loans, depending on your credit history or if you have a credit-worthy cosigner. If you have defaulted on your loans you will not be eligible, but as long as you've been making payments on time, you can re-enroll.
