What are some scholarships for a junior like me?

Should I be applying to scholarships, I've just finished junior year?

  • I've just finished junior year and so I decided to browse some scholarships. I was alarmed to find that many of the deadlines were in a couple days. Am I behind in the hunt for scholarships? Are these scholarships only eligible for those entering university this year? I've been told to start early so I'm worried that i'm missing out on all these scholarships. Quick responses, thanks.

First: don't worry and stress out for your whole senior year! But, yeah start applying. Most scholarships have deadlines between november and feb. Don't worry about the ones that have already passed, just apply to other ones. It's much easier to get a scholarship when you're still in high school so don't wait! You'll notice many scholarships limit eligibility to "high school seniors" (you will fall in that category) or "first time freshman" (that would be you as well--yes, you're not one YET, but you're going to be so you're eligible for these too). Scholarship competition is fierce, ask your guidance counselor in high school to tell you where to find LOCAL scholarships (they usually aren't "full tuition"...sometimes it's only $200, but there are many less applicants which means you're more likely to win AND $200 can buy you a few books too, so don't turn up your nose at small scholarships.) The best advice I got was to write one generic essay on a broad topic like, "What/Who has influenced my life the most?" and to tweak it and personalize it depending on which scholarship I was submitting it to. Find 10-20 scholarships you want to apply to. Compare the questions. See if you can find one answer or theme that could work for most or all of the essays, and write that one. You might have to really change it up for some of the scholarships, but usually this method works!

You are not late since this is your junior year. You can begin applying to varying groups (foundations, etc) in the fall. There are still scholarships available (though few) for students entering the freshman class in college this year.

Hiyas! From my personal experience, senior year of hs is a good time to apply/submit for a lot of scholarships. Talk to your school counselor about what is available locally, usually local businesses will send information to them and your counselor will have applications and information. When I was a senior in hs, my principal told me about the Walmart scholarship. I applied, had an interview, and won. I would have never known about it without his help.

A lot of students apply in the middle of their junior year, but there are still things you can apply for if you get on the stick now. I hope you also took your SAT's and ACT's in your junior year, because some of the applications require them. If not, sign up and take them as soon as you can. Also, decide on and apply to the universities you are considering ASAP, since they will have scholarships that apply only to their schools.
