Can I apply for student loan without the FASFA?

How can I get FASFA when I have a student loan in collections?

  • I do not have a Job and can not pay back my loan of $3,000 because I was applying for disability benefits from a car accident that left me with very limited mobility in my left elbow. I am trying to go back to school and make something of myself but I can't get financial help because of this loan I have. I went to school after my accident when I was on medication and dropped out my first semester because I could not handle my classes. When I had applied for SSI I could not work so now it has been 440 days and I need to pay it back..I don't know what to do. Also I can't work because I do not have a car. I live with my grandmother who works and drives her son to work so there really isn't a gap where I could use the car to work..any opinions on what I should do??

  • Answer:

Social Security does not pay for you to go to school (just so one poster will know) some states have school programs.... usually those for people who have disabilities are handled through Vocational Rehab You might be able to get Voc Rehab to help you get back in school... however, you will have to show them (1) that you are able to be successful in school (2) able to get to-from school.. for example using the bus (3) in many states, Voc Rehab now requires that you work for 6 months to prove your stable enough to get through school because they have to justify their use of tax-payer dollars as an investment in your education If you can't work because you don't have a way to get to-from... then how do you plan to attend school.... or even go through the extensive process of getting back in school? If you have an option to get to-from school, then you have an option to get to-from work!! Voc Rehab will require you to fill out FAFSA... and to also go through the Fin Aid process at your school... however, in most cases, Voc Rehab will still help you with school, even if you are not awarded Fin Aid from the school (in most states Voc Rehab requires you exhaust all other grants, scholarships, etc before VR funds are used) It is highly unlikely that you would be approved from SSI on the basis of limited mobility in your left elbow.... SS required TPD (Total & Permanent Disability) there are many sedentary jobs you could perform even if you had lost your entire left arm... and the basis of Social Security decision is always factored as to the person's ability to perform the functions of sedentary work with reasonable accommodations... point being, I wouldn't count on getting SSI if I were you (unless there is a great deal more wrong than what you are saying)....

You cannot get additional aid while you're in default on a student loan. What I'd suggest is this: complete the SSI process, and get SSI. Then talk to them about whether they can pay for you to go to a community college. If there is hope that with the new education, you might be able to move off the disability rolls, some states will pay for you to go to community college. And if, in the end, you cannot move off the disability rolls, you will not be penalized. It is quite possible that once you get SSI, the student loan company will garnish your SSI check. Once you get SSI, contact the loan company. Ask them how to file for forgiveness on this loan due to total and permanent disability. It may be that you'll need to move your loan out of default before you can get it discharged, but if so, work with the loan company to try to do that.

You may want to talk to a FAFSA representative. I know in my case I was attending a university for about a year. I was doing really well, but I dropped out my 3rd semester in because I realized I didn't like my major and I thought it was best for me not to return to school until I was more focused. In the mean time FAFSA and Direct Loans started mailing bills to my house when they realized I wasn't in school anymore. UGH! The following semester I enrolled back in school, and of course I had to reapply for financial aid with FAFSA. They approved my loan, and they put a hold on my payment since I was enrolled in school. Every semester since then, Direct Loan checks with my school to make sure I am enrolled, but they made it very clear that as soon as I graduate, I must start paying them back. Just talk to a FAFSA representative and see what they say. As far as transportation, take online courses! At least until you get yourself together. Most colleges and universities offer them. I hope it all works out for you. GOOD LUCK WITH EVERYTHING!!

Do you have bus service where you live. Then you would have transportation. Find any job. Go to community college and pay for it as you go , take as many classes as you can afford. Do yourself a favor and do not get another student loan.
