How do I file tuition money on my taxes?

Is money paid on tuition given back when you file your taxes?

  • I paid cash for summer classes I planned to take but actually did not but the school denied me a refund. I never attended class. I was sent a tax form from the school. Should I expect a refund from the school when filing my taxes?

  • Answer:

Ummm... no. The school has already denied you a refund. You obviously didn't pay attention to the add/drop deadlines and so you've forfeited the cash you paid. That said, you may be eligible for the American Opportunity Tax Credit (http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=211309,00.html). You can deduct your out-of-pocket education expenses and save money on your taxes. You may even get a refund for a portion of those expenses. Last year I got a thousand dollars back, which was pretty sweet.

Nope. If the school denied you a refund, then I don't understand why you'd think the federal government would give you one instead. Sounds like you missed the deadlines for dropping classes and obtaining a refund the proper way. You can, however, use the tax form received from the school when you file your taxes and hopefully you'll get a tax break.
