Can I apply FAFSA before completing my college application?

Do you have to be accepted into a college/university to list them on your FAFSA application?

  • I have to have a certain GPA to get into the college that I want; but I may need until the end of the next Spring semester to see if I have acheived that -- and by then the FAFSA deadline would pass. So...do you have to be ACCEPTED into a college/university if you want to list them on your FAFSA application for financial aid?

  • Answer:

No you don't have to be accepted to list them on your fafsa. Some schools fin aid deadlines are way before they ever even consider accepting students for admission. You can list up to 10 schools on your fafsa. Put as many as you are considering attending. In order for you to get an "Award Letter" from that school you will have to apply and be accepted. An award letter is a detailed letter of the kinds and amounts of financial aid you are being offered from that school. You can apply (and be accepted) to many many different schools and get an award letter from all of them. You can then use the award letter to help you decide where to actually attend.
