Can your receive financial aid for college more then once?

Can A Mom and Daughter Both Receive College Financial Aid?

  • My mother wants to go to college seeking a degree. However, she wants to get financial aid. She keeps telling me she ' cannot ' because her daughter (my sis) got financial aid using my moms tax information since she supports her. Is this true that a mom and daughter cannot both receive financial aid for school at the same time? I need to know so I can figure out what she can do.

  • Answer:

A mom and a daughter (or even more than one daughter) can both receive fin aid at the same time. LOL My mom went to college the same time I did and we even had some classes together. Both of us got fin aid!! When she applies for fin aid be sure she lists TWO people in college in the household when it asks... she is more likely to get free money because not only does she have a daughter in college, she is putting herself through as well. Her daughter (your sister) can only put ONE on the form because she is not expected to contribute to her moms education.

You can both receive Federal financial aid. There can be 10 people in the household, and they can all attend college and receive financial aid. This includes Pell Grants(up to 5,350 for 09-10 school year) for each student, and other grants and loans for each student. The amount of each thing your eligible to receive depends a lot on your EFC. You will see this when you finish the FAFSA application. If that number is 4617 or less, you could receive the Pell Grant. If higher, you can receive other things like loans, but not the Pell Grant. The person that commented on the Household number in college was precisely correct on how you should enter those household values in the FAFSA. Also, some websites do charge a fee to complete the FAFSA on their website, so make sure you don't go to those websites. Go to: fafsa.ed.gov. and select "Fill Out Your FAFSA" in the #2 box.

you mom and sis can both receive financial aid, but i think it determines how old your mother is. your mom should still fill out a FAFSA online and see what happens and if she is eligible for aid. she can always go to the financial aid office of her college and ask :)

It's not true. In fact, the mom has more of a chance to get financial aid because the daughter did.
