What does my EFC mean?

My EFC value for fafsa is 354...what does this mean?

  • the website stated: "The EFC is not the amount of money that you or your family must provide. Rather, you should think of the EFC as an index that schools use to determine your eligibility for federal student aid." So what does my EFC value mean then? Is it too low?

  • Answer:

yes it should be as low as possible but its based off the info you provided on your fafsa....my first year of college my efc was like 6 or 7 digits and i used my parents income because i wasn't considered independent and now that i am married and considered independent my efc is now 0 because neither me or my husband makes of $30k

EFC = Expected Family Contribution and the closer to zero, the better it is. So it's not going to be the exact amount you pay but the lower the number, the better chance you have of getting financial aid. It's sort of like..estimating how financially fit your family is to help support you throughout college. I wouldn't worry much, I think you'll get a lot of it covered.

No, it's too high. In other words, you'll get next to no financial aid.
