How to get out of Debt?

You need to watch out for some 'debt consolidation' companies. They will tell you that they can combine all of your debt, and you will only have to pay back a percentage of what you owe. Sounds like magic, right? What they do is tell you to not pay your bills for months, then they negotiate with the companies to settle your debts at a percentage of the original amount (because paying some money is better than none, right?) In the meantime, your credit score is racing towards ZERO. Your credit is ruined. The best thing to do? Call all of your credit card companies and tell them you're transferring your balances to other companies if they don't lower the rates. If the companies don't budge, find new credit cards that offer low or zero percent rates. (Trust me, they are out there.) And always try to pay at least a little over the minimum balance of each bill. That amount goes toward principle. Have patience. You can do it.

can he go Bankrupt? in the UK some people are able to go bankrupt to get rid of the dept as long as they dont ern over a specific amount each month

He needs to turn to his dreams, and passions. Saving money is not as much fun as spending it. But if you are doing it to achieve something you've dreamed about, things can be totally different. Then he can cut the phone bill, switch to no brand supermarket food, and have a real crack at it. No $1000 required.

You can help him by helping him fill out a few job applications, work on his resume, job interview skills... He needs to get a second job... discontinue the non essentials (a cell phone an essential item?) and take his expenses down to the bare minimum. Food, shelter, electicity. You would be totally amazed what you can save when you become a tightwad. Debt consolidation can sometimes be a scam.
