Writing a dependency override letter for FAFSA?
-
So I am writing my dependency override letter for FAFSA. I am 18 and live with my boyfriend. My mother is incarcerated and my father has a long history of violence on his Judiciary case search (Kidnap of Adult, Assault, DUI, Domestic Violence), would this be appropriate to include stating my reasons from moving from his home and claiming independence? I moved from his house, not my mothers, that was 4 years ago. But I feared for my life and I felt it was necessary to leave. Do I have a good chance of sustaining Independence in this case and is it appropriate to do Dependency Override?

Answer:
You have a chance IF (and only if) you provide documentation of your situation. You must gather proof that your mother is in jail (sometimes this can be printed from the internet, sometimes you can get court documents, you have to think what is available to you, do you have a newspaper clipping?, ANYTHING and everything you can get to strengthen you case will increase your chances), You also need to do the same regarding your father. Show them police reports of his various offenses, you can call the police department and get them if you don't have them. You may be able to get a copy of his "rap sheet" from them as well or know where you can get it. Also proof you moved from Dads house 4 years ago (a letter from a school principal or your school counselor). It also would help if you indeed show proof that you are independent (how you haven't starved to death the past 4 years). Paycheck stubs... rent stubs... how you have been independent and not died of exposure because you were homeless. Please note: A letter from boyfriends mom stating you are shacking up with her son in her house is prob not a good idea. You want PROFESSIONAL people vouching for you (teachers, community leaders or organizations, church leaders, your boss at work). Don't submit something that essentially says, "I have no job and don't/can't afford to support myself, but i figured out how to not starve or be homeless by shacking up at someones parents house. All I have to do is have sex with him every day". This situation does not go in your favor very well at certain colleges. lol

Only the admissions officer reviewing your waiver request can make a determination to grant you independent status. None of us here can decide, obviously. Let me suggest, however, that you compose your appeal letter very carefully, listing only facts and specifics, and avoiding at all costs any emotions. Where necessary, include documentation of what you claim (screen printouts are fine for this purpose), such as your mother's incarceration, your father's court records, etc. Good luck.
