How do I get out of debt?

How can I get into school if I'm in debt?

  • I want to go back to school but I'm in debt. I live in Massachusetts and because I have about $3500 in school debt that a collection agency now has control over. I also took out a credit card when I was 18 and owe $1000. Right now the state apparently has a block on me from attending state schools because of my debt (according to the debt collector.) I don't necessarily need to go to a state school but I'm not sure I'd get into anything else. I don't have enough time to slowly pay off my debts and eventually go to school. Basically I just want to get into school before it's too late because I'm finally ready but I don't know where to start because of my situation. Also, when I was 20 (I'm 23 now,) I was diagnosed with lymphoma and have been in remission a little over two years. I've heard there are rehabilitation programs that help people who've had life altering illnesses/injuries get their lives on track by getting them into school/paying part of the tuition. Anyone have any knowledge of this? I'm having a little trouble finding anything about it.

  • Answer:

As long as it is not the school you owe you can go back to school. The debt you have is for medical bills and can actually be voided by bankruptcy if you were to need a loan from a bank. Then again, I am not saying that you need a loan. Most students can start out at a community college where if you work part-time and have save diligently you can afford at least two classes a semester. If you can't for some reason or another, you can always go on a monthly payment plan. I just go to an in-district community college and front all my costs But you don't have to pay off the collection agency AT ALL to go to school! If they harass you over the phone, tell em you are getting a lawyer. The threat alone will let them go

That's not a very big debt, and I don't think you can be "blocked" from schools because of it. Your best bet is to fill out the FASFA, and talk to the school's counselor. I've never heard of someone being "blocked" from school for a measely $3,500. They're lying to you.

If that collection agency is trying to collect on Student Loan debt... then you need to work out something with them and YES, when you are in default on student loan debt, you can be barred from receiving any more Fin Aid until the situation is resolved What I recommend for you is to see if your doctor will give you a referral to Voc Rehab.... then go through the VR process (can take 6 months to a year) If VR determines you are eligible, then they can pay for some or all (depending on funding levels) of the cost of your education.... and, if you are working out payments with the debt collector... they might be able to get that bar lifted on the basis that they are paying your tuition Many times, when you use Voc Rehab you have to prove what you are able to contribute towards your education... and, everyone that I know who is using VR for school is also working while in school If you live at home..... then you could work & pay off that debt rather quickly (within a year or less) If you don't live at home... then ask your folks if you could move back home to get your life back together Filing for Bankruptcy is perhaps the worst advise I have ever heard for someone in your position... it would negatively affect your credit for 10 years... and it would cause banks to not want to loan money to you... Please do not follow that advise maybe some schools offer monthly payment plans... at ALL of the public schools in AL your tuition & fees must be PAID IN FULL... BEFORE the start of classes; otherwise, you are automatically dropped out of those classes due to lack of funding
