What gives student loan companies so much control?

• So maybe I'm just bitter because of my situation, but how is it that companies who "help" students by offering loans to go to college can turn around and destroy every chance for a future a few years later. I feel like these companies have just turned into money hungry giants in an economy where even college grads are struggling to make ends meet. Your thoughts.

  Student loan companies are a business. You don't stay in business by giving people money and allowing them to not pay it back. If you get a mortgage and don't pay it, they take your house. If you get a car loan and don't pay it, they take your car. You can't repossess a degree, so they have to find other ways of getting their money back if you don't pay your student loans. Could their practices be improved? Maybe. But the students have to take some responsibility too. Students taking out $100,000 in loans for a liberal arts degree is just as bad as the people buying $500,000 houses with only a lower-middle-class salary back in the early 2000s. Its not the banks' job to prevent you from making a bad decision.
