How do I get grants/scholarships for college?

How and Where to get a College Loan?

  • Alright so here's the story. I'm in my second semester of college, I go to a county college (aka community college). Well back over the summer before I had to pay my tuition, my car needed heavy work ($1,900 worth) so that was like most of my tuition money right there. Tried getting loans, got denied because my dad has too many loans out plus my brother's college loans. So my brother ended up paying for it for me. So all and all it's good right now, my dad paid for this semester and going to pay for the next two semesters in cash. But he said I'm on my own when it comes to getting a loan for when I go to a university. Since we got denied, I'm a little nervous. I mean we can pay off the loans but the banks you know, aren't just lending out money anymore. So where are places I can get student loans? And how would I go about doing this? Plus now I have two credit cards (which I didn't have at the time I did the loans) so I'm building up my own credit. I always pay on time and have perfect credit right now. Do you think I would need a cosigner by next summer if I apply for a loan? Any ways to make sure by then I'll get approved for a loan? Oh and one more thing, if I get a college loan, could I also use some of the money to buy like dorm things like a laptop and sheet, etc? Or does it just go to the college and books? I'm just more concerned about getting a loan. Even though I have a year and a half to go.

  • Answer:

Have you done your FAFSA application? this is for Pell Grant (you may or may not qualify) & this is also for Federal Student Loans that do not require credit worthiness... they are loans made out to you, not your dad that are used to pay tuition, etc...... they are paid directly to the school http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ You can use this at your community college..... it might be enough to cover the majority of tuition at local uni, but it isn't nearly enough to cover things like dorm fees, etc...... Given your situation, you will want to apply for every scholarship that applies to you

Here is the federal site http://www.direct.ed.gov/ Best way to get aproved? Be poor or a minority

If you apply for a loan through the government for school in your name, it will be approved. I had absolutely no credit and was approved right away for the loan, which covers my tuition, room, board, school books, etc.
