Do I have to report my dad's finances on college financial aid forms if he has never paid child support?
-
I live with my mom in a different state. I rarely see my dad and he has never paid any child support. My mom files "Head of Household" on her taxes. Do I have to report my dad's income? My dad makes a lot of money, so it seems as if I did have to put him down on the financial aid forms that I would not get any financial aid, even though it is badly needed....... and my mom is a teacher, so she certainly doesn't make that much money. Thanks for your helpful answers.

Answer:
You put down the information of the parent who supports you at least 50%. Since your dad has never made a child support payment, I would assume your mom supports you well more than 50%. If your parents are still married, your mom can state that she is separated and most likely your school will not require your dad's information. Your mom filing head of heashold actually supports this. If anyone asks, submit a statement stating that your parents are separated and your father does not contribute to or belong to your household.

I'm guessing your parents are not married (mine aren't either) and my mom files just as your mom. We report what LITTLE my dad pays but since your dad doesn't pay a dime, you don't live with him, and your parents aren't married, legally you do not have to report your dads income.

Why don't you see about getting back child support from him? It may pay for college. I'm surprised your mom hasn't stood up for the two of you before this. The gov't would have garnished his wages and intercepted his tax refunds & rebates and given the money to you guys. Just a thought.

In NJ....he would be paying or in jail by now..........The County Sheriffs Officers should be knocking on his door right about now. Read the instructions carefully...There is a Department in your school to ask these type of questions. A guess...NOT his income.....possibly his support though.

No you do not. You have to put down your mother's income becuase you lived with her. If your father did pay child support for you then there is a line for that, no matter how small it was. I know you said he didn't, but sometimes even $20 a month can seem like nothing. Anyway, no the fafsa people don't care about your dad's income in this particular situation, they won't require it.
