How Can I Get Money For School?
-
I am a entering Florida State University as an out-of-state Junior. At this point, I have only been given about $7,000 in federal loans. According to the government, my parents can afford to send me to school, but that is out of the question. They are paying off my dad's student loans and there is no way they could afford mine. On top of that, I am also considered a dependent and an Ohio resident. From what I understand, you cannot become a resident of a state purely to go to school there. And as I understand it, I am also considered a dependent until I'm 24 unless I get married, have a child, join the military etc. My problem is that I don't know how to go about getting money for school. What's the best way to get a private loan as a student? I'm not to sure how these things work. I really need to get a loan that I won't have to pay off until I graduate. I'd really appreciate answers from people who are professionals in this area. I'm very confused and overwhelmed and really afraid that I won't be able to go back to school.

Answer:
Apply for every single scholarship at FSU offers and you are remotely qualified for. I applied for every scholarship I could at UF and got around $5,000 a semester if you add all the scholarships and grants I got. The first thing you need to do is go to or call the financial aid office and the college that you will be majoring in and ask about scholarships and how to apply for them at FSU. There are a lot of unadvertised scholarships and grants that only the financial aid office or the department of your major knows about so make it know that you are willing to apply for those scholarships. And DO NOT go to www.fastweb.com because it is a complete waste of time. And it is just a scam to get you to sign up and get sent spam and junk mail. I tried it for the first couple of years in college and didn't get any scholarships or grants from them. But I applied for scholarships and grants from the university and got 3 my first year, totaling up to $1200. Every little bit helps. Just don't got after the big scholarships, go for the $200 and $300 ones because they do add up and there is no limit on how many scholarships you can get or apply for.

Caitlin, have you consider to apply for scholarship? If you could get scholarship you don't have to pay anything back. Some friends of mine at college told me that they have valuable information regarding scholarships from this place. Good luck
Your are still living with your parents therefore anything you earn from a min wage job could be saved towards your education in addition to the $7000 grant. So many people work and go to school or work to save money for that purpose and delay going to school until they have enough for tuition and living expenses. Quite a few employers offer benefits that include paying for school while you work for them as long as you complete with a passing grade. If your Dad has opted to pay off his own student loans instead of contributing to your education first it seems he is either inconsiderate of your needs, or he has been forced by collections to do it now, or he is using tough love methods on you for some reason. It sounds like you are intelligent enough to do most of this on your own you just have to do a few things for yourself. Start by actually going outside of the home and meeting counselors at Youth Centers who can refer you to the correct organization for assistance. It could take some groundwork and you might have to pound the pavement. Also if you cannot go to Florida state due to finances you can opt for something closer to home and in future when you can afford it, go to your choice of institutions. Millions do it.
