Answer:
No, you do not have to apply to a college first in order to complete the FAFSA. You can have the results of the FAFSA (sent to you in the form of a Student Aid Report, and to the schools in the form of an ISIR (Institutional Student Information Report)). The schools you choose to put on the FAFSA will receive the information no matter if you have applied to the institution or not. However, most school's financial aid "on-time" deadlines have passed for the 0708 school year. While you can still complete the FAFSA for the 0708 school year up until June 30, 2008, you may not receive the funds you could have had you applied by the school's deadline. If you are unsure of where you want to go and you want to go now, why not go to a community college first while you research and decide what four year institution you want to attend. Then you can have time to apply to the school and have time to apply for the school's 0809 financial aid deadline. I know this was a long answer, but again, basically the answer is no - school's will receive your FAFSA information regardless if you have applied for admission there or not if you have included their school code on the FAFSA. Good luck!

Yes, you need to get into school before applying for FASFA. You need a school code to apply. Best wishes on your return.

It's preferable that you apply to a college before filing for fafsa, so that you could state the colleges that you want to receive your fafsa report. Although you could still get scholarships and file for fafsa without having applied to a college. Some scholarships require you to show proof of the college you will attend in the fall before you could receive your award. It depends on the scholarship.

No you do not have to be admitted to a school to apply for the FAFSA but you will not get award letters from those schools you listed on the FAFSA to compare award letters until you have met there minimum admission requirements.
