What is a Federal Pell Grant?

What happens to my federal pell grant if i drop a class within the first week of school?

  • so what if i dropped all my classes within the first couple days or first week of school? do i have to repay the grant? example: so lets say my school starts april 1, and april 4 i have to move somewhere to a different state, so if i drop my classes, do i have to repay the federal grant i received?

  • Answer:

It depends on your school's withdrawal policy and how much of the program you completed. Usually, a school can keep at least part of the grant. For example, at a school I worked at recently, the withdrawal policy stated that if a student withdrew before the first class, there was a 100% refund of tuition for the entire term. From Day 1 to Day 14, you would be charged 50%. After Day 14, you would be charged for the entire term. The school would be entitled to keep grant money for the time you completed, but it might not be enough to cover the charges, so you would end up owing a balance to the school. If you received Pell money yourself (for example for living expenses), but didn't stay in school, you would have to repay the grant.
