Can I change my parent on FAFSA?

With Fafsa is there anyway to get around filing as a dependent?

  • This is the problem And please dont just send links to other websites. I tried calling their phone number and didnt get any help that way either. Im 22 now (b-day 10/6/85). I have lived on my own for alittle over 2 years. The last year I have a lease for proof and the time before I could get a affidavit. I have filed two tax returns 2007 and 2006 by myself (I was not a dependent on their taxes.) I have a two year degree and work full time. I dont recevive any assistant from my parent. I live in rochester and they live in buffalo. Are there any exceptions you can get for the dependence part of fafsa. My parent make too much money for me to quaify for any aid with them. They will not help with college (as they shouldnt have too) or co sign a loan for it. I have friends who do have "poorer" parents and they get a refund check for going to school. I cant even get money to help with school. If anyone know of any loopholes or a way to get them to change your status let me kno

  • Answer:

If you have tried filling out a fafsa for the 08-09 year and it says that you are dependent and need your parents information, their is no way around it. The only other way is to file an appeal to say that you have no relationship with them at all. And they will need a lot of proof and verification of this. Your parents should help you fill out a fafsa and if they make too much money for you to receive grants then they should help you get a student loan. It is their responsibility to help out their own child. You can also apply for scholarships to help out with tuition. Check with your school to see what ones they offer and you can also go to fastweb.com.

You are assuming you will not get financial aid based on your parents income and this is simply not the case. You will be eligible for federal Stafford loans (likely in the amount of 5,500 per year). You will NOT need to have a cosigner and will not need to pass a credit check. The dependent/independent status is not based on who supports (or doesn't support you), who claims who on what tax form, or where you live, it is simply a government "classification" and doesn't mean you are actually dependent. LOL that would be way to easy for the government!! There is no way around it in your situation..... until you are married, have kids, become and orphan, get a bachelors degree, become a veteran you will have to report the folks income. Just remember by providing it, they are not obligating themselves to pay for your education at all... but allowing you to do it for yourself.
