How Do You Manage Being A Full Time Student And Work A Full Time Job?
-
I plan on being a full time adult student but I know I will need a full time job as well to keep things going at home. I am very concerned about how I will be able to keep my grades up if I am working full time. I have seen people on this board saying they are doing it so I am hoping these people can tell me how they are managing to make both work and what kind of toll it is taking on them. Thank you for your time.

Answer:
it can take quite a toll on a person if they aren't able to manage both responsbilities too well. the way that i worked around it is that i set my schedule to attend as many classes as i could either one or two days out of the week, so those would be my *off* days at work for that week.. i worked retail during my time in school and they were very generous at working with all of our school schedules. i'd spend that time at school, studying or working on whatever else i needed to work on for school. i was taking 4 classes each semester and my very last semester i was feeling bold and ended up taking 5 (NEVER AGAIN, i do not advise this lol). i also took classes during the summer so that i could finish faster. the best thing to do is to realize that your classes need your full attention and devotion, if you know that you're going to be quite busy at work with projects and what not i would only take AT THE MOST 3 classes and even then don't make them super hard classes either. good luck to you!

It is not easy. It takes time management, sacrifice and a lot of determination. You will first need to consider your job schedule, how will you work? If you work during the day, then you might can take online classes or night classes. If you work at night, you can take day classes and be fine. Second, have to consider your program of choice. Some programs take up sooo much time that you will virtually none left to work or be so tired, that something is going to fail. I didn't work full, but I worked part time with a child. It isn't easy as it sounds. But you can do it. You just have to know what is important, and jus tmake sure you priortized it. Basically, I found a job that taylored to my school schedule. Find an employer that is willing work with you, and you are willing work with them for the other times.

I work full-time and go to school full-time... it is difficult, but I haven't found it too difficult. I work 8-5 Monday through Friday, and then I take a mix of online and evening classes. Evening classes are 1 class for 4 hours and the class will meet once each week - 5:30-9:30pm. The past two quarters, I've taken all online classes. They are a bit more difficult and typically involve quite a bit more work; however, it's nice to not have to drive to the school and sit in class for 4 hours because that's difficult after having been at work for 9 hours. I've been in school for a little over 4 years now and will graduate next month with my Bachelors degree. I'm a single mom to a 9-year old boy with autism and sensory disorder and I have a home. I have had pretty much no social life for 9 years... I typically go out to dinner or to the movies twice a year. I've learned to prioritize. Every day on my drive home from work I'm deciding (a) what absolutely has to be done that night (b) what should be done that night (c) what I would like to do (d) what can wait until another night. The dishes might not get washed except for a few times each week and the house may only get picked up once each week... but, as long as the necessities are getting done... I've learned to let the small things go. I currently have a cummulative gpa of 3.9 and have a 4.0 for this quarter with 4 weeks left to go. I don't sleep very much throughout the week -- 4 - 4.5 hours is pretty normal. I typically stay up all night on Friday night doing homework and go to bed around 6am but then am able to sleep until noon unless we have plans that day. Saturday night I try to get to bed at a decent time and get at least 8 hours of sleep that night. I am constantly tired and busy, but I'm succeeding in all areas - so, I'm happy. Obviously, if you don't have a child or children... it may not be as difficult because all of your time is your own. It will still be busy and you'll have to sacrifice some of the social life - but, you can learn to priortize pretty well by the second semester. You'll learn how much time you need for each class and you'll fit it in your schedule. Good luck to you -- it is possible and you can keep your grades up. It's important to not let yourself get behind in your classes... that's what kills a lot of adult students because it is so hard to catch up if you fall behind.
