I need slight help with filling out the FAFSA.

I need help filling out my fafsa?

  • i am filling out my fafsa but i don't live with parents because they live in a different country. i lived with my grandma for more than five years now and she is my guardian for school information and everything. can i put her information down for parental information?

  • Answer:

No, you cannot use your grandmother's information. If she is your legal guardian (i.e. she was appointed by a court and you have the papers to prove it), you would be considered an independent student and would not be required to provide parent information. There is a question on the FAFSA that asks if you are in legal guardianship--if so, check that and you'll be all set. If your grandmother is not your court appointed legal guardian, then you must provide parent information even if they live in another country. You would need to convert their income from whatever currency they use to U.S. dollars. For a social security # you would enter all 0's. If they have access to the internet, they can easily fill in the FAFSA online. If not, you can mail a paper copy. If you do not have any contact with your parents and cannot reasonably establish contact with them or obtain their information, you may be eligible for a dependency override, a process that allows a financial aid officer to override the requirement to include parental information. Whatever your circumstance, you would never include financial information for anyone but yourself and/or your parents. It would be a good idea for you to call your school's financial aid office and let them know your situation. They will be happy to help you.

Is your grandmother a legal guardian through the court? If so this changes a lot. I would contact FAFSA directly on this complicated case so that you do not do it wrong and then not get your financial aid in time for school. Here is where you fill it out.
