What happens if you refuse to pay back Student Loans?
-
I am asking this question NOT for myself, but my neighbor.... My neighbor is on disability. She gets a check in the mail for it every month. She refuses to ever get a job, because it will cut into her Disability checks. SO, she got the idea to go to college. She got a FULL pell grant, paying for all her college. PLUS, she got student loans. She uses her student loans to buy crap, like a new T.V, clothes, DVD's, etc. She doesnt go to many of her college classes, because she admitted to me she is 'only doing it for the student loan checks.' She also said she plans on NEVER paying them back. She thinks nothing will happen, because she is on disability, and food stamps, so she thinks they cant take anything from her if she refuses to pay it back. What can she expect if she refuses to pay them back?

Answer:
Nothing will happen except a bad scrape on her credit. They can deny her an apartment, a vehicle, a home, a loan. Just depends on how much she owes.

For one, her credit will probably be royally messed up and that could come back to bite her. Her account will likely be sent to an agency for collection and she may be hounded a lot by creditors. She may have legal judgments against her. I do not know how this works, but she it sounds like she is committing some kind of fraud and there could be severe penalties for this. It makes me sick that she is abusing this money when there are so many deserving people who would do anything for that education. How sad. She sounds pretty messed up and is kind of arrogant to think she won't pay any kind of price. Someone might just turn her in, too! I hope that happens so that no more money will be wasted on her.

Her disability payments can and will be garnished, (eventually). They will give her every opportunity to repay it of course before it comes to that. Her income tax returns and any government benefits will also be intercepted as well. (Stimulus checks and such). Her credit score will be decimated and she will never be able to buy anything on credit of any real value, house, car. Student loans never go away, when she turns 65 and is old and grey and if her student loans are still not repaid they will still take her government money.
just not that
Well, I don't know about the other stuff, but if she doesn't keep her grades up she's going to lose any grants she may be getting. Serves her right. She also might not be eligible for further student loans.

i never paid back my student loans, and it's been over 10 years since i quit college (which is when you're supposed to start paying them back). i got lots of annoying calls from collections agents for a while, but haven't had one in several years now. and for the last 4 or 5 years i haven't gotten my tax refund check - it goes straight to the student loan people. also stuff like stimulus checks - that $600 that everyone got earlier this year, i just got a letter saying i wasn't going to get it. i just got on disability, and will start getting it next month. i've been trying to figure out if they can take money out of that for the student loans. no one at social security knew, and i found a lot of conflicting information on the web, but the best i can figure is that they can take anything over $750, or 15% of your check, whichever is less. so all that kind of sucks, but it's not horrible. there's not much else they can do. oh, and it hurts your credit a little bit, but someone who worked for a credit company told me that most people who check your credit don't care about student loans or medical bills, just other kinds of debt. i actually have a pretty good credit score.
