How can I get money for school? Grants, Loan, Scholarship, Poor Credit?
-
I am a 23 year old female trying to go back to school this Fall. I have been working full time since I got out of school because I don't have a supportive family. I have been pretty much raising myself since I was 17 years old. Even though I work full time, it's just to live basically (pay my bills, car payment, car insurance, utilities, food), I don't have any money saved and have poor credit due to stupid choices I made when I was 18. Obviously I want better for myself hence the fact I'm going back to school for nursing. I am very independent and have a strong will. I do have a car payment which has always been current, as well as paying on my student loans from my last attempt at school. However all of the other bad things on my credit report are preventing me from getting a student loan. I did apply for financial aid, still waiting on the approval or decline. However even with just financial aid I will still need some financial help to help me succeed. Is there anywhere out there I can go to get a student loan by myself without a cosigner? Or Scholarships, or grants? I have no family to depend on for a cosigner, it's just me doing this on my own. ANY advice would help! I really appreciate it! Thank you!

Answer:
Have you considered getting your Associates Degree as RN at your local community college? the is the most affordable way to get through school and AS RN is very marketable. You could even go to work for an employer who will pay the cost for you to continue your education to BS RN while you are working for them (many hospitals who need RNs offer this) additionally, you can continue to work full-time while getting your pre-requisites... I know many people who work full-time while in school full-time (Even all they way through to their degree)

You won't get any credit based loans with bad credit and no cosigner, that's just not going to happen. Financial aid you get from applying with the FAFSA is not credit based though so you should get at least some aid in the form of student loans. Expect to continue working full time while in school. It sucks, but people do it all the time.

Check into private scholarships by using a free resource like ScholarshipExperts.com and Collegeboard.org. There are several specifically for nursing. Also, Google 'Loan Forgiveness Programs for Nursing' and find the one specific for your state. These programs will actually pay your student debt after you work for a state hospital for a determined amount of time. Be sure to complete the FAFSA too (you'll have to use your parents info, as well a yours), as you may still be able to qualify for federal aid and institutional scholarships and/or grants.

Yes,having bad credit can indeed hurt you in the end. However that does not stop colleges from offering financial aid. Go to whatever school it is you want to attend, tell them about the situation you are in and make sure they know how strongly you want to take this class and be successful. They will help you,I'm sure. Not everyone has 10,000$ to pull out of their pocket and pay for college. I'm sure you will get help, good luck.
