How to pay for European college?
-
Hey guys, this is SO confusing, I am looking at Trinity College in Dublin and they are expensive (but no more expensive than any American university I am looking at) but one thing seems to be missing: FINANCIAL AID I can't figure out how you get financial aid from these guys cause I'm looking at 31,000$/year (current conversion rate) I am not looking for a one year study abroad, I am looking to go there for four years, please, help me figure this out so I can make my dreams a reality. Thanks.

Answer:
The universities in the EU are required to treat students from the whole of the EU the same way as they treat their own. They are not obliged to fund non-EUoverseas students. Your best hope is to look for a scholarship in the US that fits your criteria. Some scholarships are very specific - for the sons of shoemakers, resident in such and such town....

At eddx, look at "Scholarships and Grants." Then check out "Study Abroad Grants."

Did you also get to the point where you have to prove that you have the amount to sustain yourself for the entire first year before you can go there? It is certainly not cheaper, for the very reason that you mentioned, you are going to be going this in loans, and it is not worth it, sorry. Scholarships for International students are thin (and thinning) and very competitive. You will not be given grants at all, and it is generally assumed that loans from America will be covering your costs. Contact the financial aid office to see if there are any routs that you have not yet encountered, but this is just the reality. The UK and Ireland are desirable, because people who only speak English cannot study anywhere else in Europe, and a lot of people come from developing countries, they rip you off with the huge fee because they can (hey, you're actually considering paying them, wow!), and America does the exact same thing. Studying abroad is a luxury, so you will have to pay luxurious fees, so you better be studying nursing, or something where you can find a job. I really wanted to study in the UK or Ireland right out of high school. But your undergrad is not very important, and it is a huge rip off when you are stuck with the bill. Americans who go to the UK and Ireland also have a very hard time finding work in either country, making it even less worth the risk. Because I was in your shoes, I know that you are probably not going to listen to me, but do you really want to graduate with that kind of debt? So are you doing a foundation degree first? Higher education leading to a Bachelors is only 3 years, and Americans usually go right in without having to do that foundation degree.
