How does the hope scholarship works?

Georgia's Hope Scholarship?

  • I'm a junior in high school and I have a 3.0 GPA meaning that I qualify for Georgia's HOPE scholarship, but there is one thing I'm concerned about. Throughout my high school career I haven't won not a single award or done any volunteer work which I'm told is something they ask about on the application form. I have time to get in the volunteer work, but would it really help as far as getting the scholarship?

  • Answer:

I didn't win any awards or do any volunteer work either. I also didn't even finish high school. I dropped out a year ago- my sophmore year. HOPE is paying for most of my college (just started). I only had to pay $230 for 2 books. I got a $100 book allowance. Just make sure you fill out a FAFSA, and once you apply for the college you want to get into, you should call the financial aid office and they can tell you whether you qualify for HOPE or not and if you did, they should tell you much how much you qualified for. Just based on my FAFSA, my financial aid office got HOPE for me. I didn't have to fill out an application. I wouldn't worry about volunteer work unless you just want to do it. Good Luck.

It won't affect your HOPE eligibility, but it may have an impact on getting into the college of your choice. Get active in a local charity, like Relay for Life or The Ronald McDonald House.
