How do I get finacial aid through a community college....?

  • My parents claimed me on there taxes for the 2011 tax year and now i am trying to goto college I do not live with them and I havent since 2011 and I get food stamps how do I get FAFSA and not have to enter there information I am souly living on my own so I need to get finacial aid to goto school.

  • Answer:

If you are not over 24, are not married, and do not have kids, you are a dependent for financial aid purposes. You have to use their information for financial aid until you become independent according to the rules you can read on www.fafsa.ed.gov Whether your parents claim you on taxes or not is irrelevant.

If you're not an "independent" student (you're not) and want to get financial aid for college, you'll need to complete and file the FAFSA--Free Application for Federal Student Aid--to qualify. Remember, if you're under 24, single, no children, it doesn't matter if you live separate from your parents, whether or not they listed you on their income tax, whether you talk to them or not: you're still classified as "dependent" for FAFSA purposes. You'll need your parent's income and asset information, along with your own. What schools are you applying to? Have you already submitted applications? Good luck.
