Is it possible to go to community college and a CSU?

How does being on welfare, planning on going to community college, and financial aid work? Also...?

  • My First Question: I'm planning to attend Fresno City College to earn some credits to go to CSU of Fresno, so first off what is a good way to do so? I have no clue on how to go about that!? My second question: If I am receiving welfare (cash assistance, foodstamps ect.) due to my being a single mother and I'm thinking they help pay for college, so how does That work with the Financial Aid I'd apply for? Would that go to the welfare, would it all be seperate, or would I even qualify? ONE MORE QUESTION: I am a 17 year old emancipated minor and just took my GED test, passed, received my GED certificate ect. I was able to take my GED because a vocational cosmotology school was going to accept me after completion of my GED but now I have a change of heart and want to attend Community college to go to State, is my GED restricted for that vocational school or does it matter now that I have it? I will be 18 Aug. 4th, I believe summer/fall classes start this June or July not forsure, I am in Fresno, CA. I am the primary recipient for my welfare with my one child, I am a dependant, no job. HOPE THAT ALL HELPS PLEASE NOTHING NEGATIVE IM JUST A YOUNG GIRL TRYING TO MAKE IT LIKE THE REST OF US, I APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE AND SUPPORT :) thanks

In some states, you will loose welfare if you are enrolled in college..... the logic is that the hours you spend for school could have been hours spent for work You need to do some research as it relates to your state's rules about foodstamps, cash assistance, etc... you might find that one form of aid is affected & other forms aren't or you might find that you can't receive welfare aid while in school In some states, any assistance towards school counts just like it was income & with that a loss or reduction of benefits because you appear to have a much higher income than you do Fortunately for you, you are in California... some of the cheapest state schools in the nation are available to you as well as very generous funding (BOG, tuition waivers, book fee waivers, etc....) I am not sure, but I am guessing that Cali (being progressive) might not remove your welfare..... however, you don't want to find out that you owe back money because you were no longer eligible for aid or suddenly get cut-off.... so make sure you know in advance Summer classes start in June...... the applications for Fin Aid that have been taken recently were for Fall.... in Cali it was a deadline of March 1st or 2nd for school starting Fall-August talk with your community college & see what they can do to to help you.... if you get your paperwork done NOW, then maybe it will be close enough to the deadline that passed earlier this month Congrats on your GED & good luck with your future Edit to add: Kyle isn't wrong on this one.. because in some states you can not receive any form of welfare while in college

By saying you're a "17 year old emancipated minor," I assume you have court documentation attesting to that? If so, you'll be considered "independent" for FAFSA purposes, not "dependent." Congratulations on passing your GED; that will serve you well in the college process. If you haven't already done so, go online and complete and file the FAFSA--Free Application for Federal Student Aid--listing your income and financial assets, and putting Fresno City College as one of the colleges you plan to attend. Then, complete the application for admittance to FCC. Call the school's financial aid/admissions office for help with the process. College fall terms usually begin in September. You might want to telephone your local public assistance office (or whatever it's called in California) and ask about continuing to receive welfare while attending college. Some states consider these to be two separate issues; check to be sure. Have you thought about how you'll pay for food/shelter/day care while you're a student? Do you have backup plans for these? Good luck.

i agree 100 percent with Denny.. I am also trying to go to collage, but I am 19 with a small child ( not single mother though) i do receive "welfare". I basically got all my college (including books and supplies) payed for. you CAN get financial aid although you have "welfare". like he said though, make sure you do say youre dependent on the application. and there are certain days it has to be turned in by. just be sure you do it by the deadline. they also have scholarships for single mothers... along with many more!
