Are there any scholarships for adult students?

What are some good scholarships and grants for part time adult students?

  • I work full time as a CAD technician and am starting school in the fall for my civil engineering degree. Does anyone know of any good scholarships or grants for people in my position?

  • Answer:

Check with your college financial office. They have access to thousands of 'real' scholarships. Grants are usually based on financial need, and if you will not be working during school you may qualify. Also check websites for civil engineer groups, they often sponsor promising students.

With a full time "real" job you are not likely to qualify for grants, but you are certainly able to take out student loans and do a google search for scholarships you may be eligible for. There are scholarships out there for engineering students specifically from various engineering societies (ASCE for example).

Just saw a posting on ScholarshipExperts.com about scholarships for adults, http://www.scholarshipexperts.com/blog/paying-for-college-2/you%E2%80%99re-never-too-old-for-scholarships, you can also use their service to find other awards specific to your needs. Totally free to use.

To add to the other 2 good answers you have already received . . . If you have not already completed and submitted the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid - http;//www.fafsa.ed.gov ) do that soon. It is the form needed for your school to evaluate your financial situation to offer you a possible Federally funded grant and a Federal loan. Many colleges/universities have scholarship/grant funds (funds that do not need to be repaid) for just their own students. Staff members of the colleges/universities may need the info from your completed FAFSA or may need a completed CSS Profile (from the College Board - http://sitesearch.collegeboard.org/?q=css+profile&searchType=site&x=11&y=10 ) to determine if you will be awarded any scholarships/grants. Hold a telephone conversation with a financial aid adviser at your school or look on the school's Financial Aid web pages for info on scholarships and grants. You can also look for scholarships for which you may qualify/to which you may wish to apply by using what I think is the best, most reliable database: Scholarship Search offered by the well-respected College Board: * http://apps.collegeboard.org/cbsearch_ss/welcome.jsp Click on the Start link in the middle of the text. If you choose to register (free – registration is not required to use Scholarship Search) so you may return later and modify your search strategy, feel secure that you will not receive spam emails. Don't select too many defining terms in your search strategy, which may result in a poor scholarship search result. Librarians--Ask Us, We Answer!
