How do I apply for the Summer Pell Grant?
-
I've heard that I can get a pell grant for the summer semester, separate from the Fall & Spring grant, is that true? I am already receiving the pell now, I'm currently taking 12 credit hours and will be taking 14 credit hours in the Spring. How do I know if I qualify and how do I apply? The school's not giving me any information as far as the Summer pell is concerned, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:
You can actually qualify for a SECOND pell grant (yes, two pell grants in one year, and it is seperate from the Fall & Spring award) if you take at least 24 hours in the Fall and Spring (which is full-time and 12 hours each semester), and enroll in at leat 6 credit hours in the summer. Your school should notify you towards the end of the Spring semester if you qualify for the summer pell grant award. You should check with your financial aid office to verify, since this is a fairly new program (that started last year 2009-2010). Be specific about what you're asking for.

Wow... didn't know about this... apparently just started this summer. Now the fafsa applies to fall, spring, and summer of that year; if you have any funds leftover from fall and spring, they can now be applied to summer. This isn't much different from before though, because you could always use your refund from fall and spring and physically hand it in to pay for summer. I guess it's more convenient now. " Starting in summer 2010, students will be able to use their Federal Pell Grant Program federal aid toward their summer college courses. In the Past, a college student could only use these grant funds for spring and fall college programs. Students who take advantage of this federal aid for their summer courses can complete their college degree programs more quickly, which can save additional money in tuition and room and board costs. To be eligible for using this federal aid for their summer courses, students must have completed 24 credit hours toward their degree programs during the prior fall and spring semesters and have received passing grades, and they must enroll in at least 6 hours of courses during the summer. This significant change to how the Pell Grant is administered joins other recent changes to this federal financial aid program. In 2009, President Obama increased the annual maximum financial aid award offered by the Pell Grant program. In 2009, the federal aid program’s maximum award was increased 13%, up to $5,350. The administration plans to continue increasing the maximum award to an estimated $6,900 in 2019, in accordance with projected inflation trends in college costs such as tuition and room and board. " " You might be eligible to receive the Pell Grant for your summer classes. For Financial Aid, the award year is Fall, Spring, Summer allowing for any unused Pell Grant to be awarded in Summer if the student is eligible. We encourage Financial Aid students who take summer classes to contact us to see if there is eligibility to receive Pell funds. "

The pell grant is only done once a year (when you fill out your fafsa). It is then automatically divided into 2 semesters. If your taking a summer course it is up to you to either 1) have the school hold onto some of that money (which btw some schools automatically do this unless you sign something saying you wont be taking summer courses) or 2) have the money put aside for the summer course. There is not a pell grant for summer courses itself its just rolled over from your spring semester.
