Can I change my parent on FAFSA?

Can't update fafsa info?

  • Hi I'm trying this again because I am still confused. I filled out my fafsa January 3rd, way before my mom and I filed our taxes obviously. As of recently however, both my mom and I have filed our taxes. Now, I'm trying to go back and use the IRS Data Retrieval tool to update the financial information. I click "make fafsa corrections" and it worked for my moms (I was able to use the IRS tool and updated her financial information) but mine is no where to be found! There is no "student financial information" for me to update, so I can't enter my tax info or use the retrieval tool. I go through the entire thing from the beginning, and my only options to change are "student demographics, school info, parent demographics, financial info (parents), and then I can just sign and submit. I NEED to update my information so I can receive my financial aid! Anyone know what's going on?

  • Answer:

It depends on your answers. The FAFSA site displays fields dynamically, meaning, depending on your answers, some fields or some buttons may display or not display. If you are a dependent, you don't even need to submit any of your financial information. Everything will be based on your mom's. So you don't need to worry. But if you still insist on providing your IRS data, check on the Student Finances page, did you say "Already Filed"? I think that field will dynamically display the IRS Data retreival tool.

Did you do file our own taxes? Did you make enough to have to file taxes? If you did not file your own taxes then there will be nothing to retrieve from the IRS retrieval tool. All you would need to do is where it says student income question 38 you would look at your W2 and put the amount you worked.

PETA

Have you tried contacting FAFSA support as you said that you would last time? If so, what did they say? If there is no question along the lines of "Would you like to skip questions pertaining to your income and assets," for you to toggle (allowing you to add your information), then getting your IRS Tax Return Transcript and providing it to your school may be your only option. A couple of years ago, you would have been to make a correction to any FAFSA field, but they have made the form "smarter," and therefor more frustrating when it comes to making corrections. Again, if you haven't contacted them, go ahead and do so.
