How can I survive uni with only £2 a day left after rent and tuition fees are payed?
-
My dad is a teacher so he doesn't earn much and we are a family of 4 children (including me) and just my dad since my mum died last year. My dad is still in debt from funeral bills so has no money to give me but since he earns over £25000 I'm not entitled to the full grants, etc. Anyway I was calculating how much I would have to spend next year and minus the cheapest rent I could find I end up with a total of £2 per day!!! thats for clothes, food, pens, paper, note taking equipment (I'm dyslexic), toiletries, calculators, fixing my bicycle, so a social life is out of the question! I currently do the food shopping, and other household shopping for the family and know how to find the cheeper things, but they tend to be the bigger packs which for just one person isnt so good, and even then i know i couldn't survive on £2 per day - I could just about spend only £1 a day on food but the other £1 would be gone in seconds on other essentials. (this is presuming i take out a separate loan for my £9000 of fees, if not i would be in around minus £8000 a year if I'm not counting loans as minus money) any ideas where else I can get money? considering i can't get a job as I am aiming for A*A*A to study maths at uni which will also require a lot of work. and currently I am the "mother" part of my family too so have all the household chores as my mum used to do them all before (she didn't have a job after I was born) any advice on any grants or anything that i could get would be really helpful!

Some universities offer their students bursaries, particularly if they are doing a priority subject such as Science and Engineering, some may include maths as well. Also some universities give new student an extra payment if they done exceptionally well in their A levels. Also worth a try is doing an internet search on scholarships. As for earning money there are always the holidays. My daughter earned money this summer doing bar work at music festivals,a nephew did apple picking. You could offer maths tuition for 11+. Theres also selling your old stuff on ebay or boot sales. Get yourself a good student account that gives you an interest free over-draft. It is do able, you sound quite sensible person. All the best

Remember you don't have to pay anything of your student loans, until you are earning, I think it is about 21,000 a year. Have you read Martin's money, he can be found on google
