How much can a starting teacher spend on rent?

How will I get through uni with only £2 per day once my rent is payed?

  • My dad is a teacher so he doesn't earn much and we are a family of 4 children (including me) and just my dad since my mum died last year. My dad is still in debt from funeral bills so has no money to give me but since he earns over £25000 I'm not entitled to the full grants, etc. Anyway I was calculating how much I would have to spend next year and minus the cheapest rent I could find I end up with a total of £2 per day!!! thats for clothes, food, pens, paper, note taking equipment (I'm dyslexic), toiletries, calculators, fixing my bicycle, so a social life is out of the question! I currently do the food shopping, and other household shopping for the family and know how to find the cheeper things, but they tend to be the bigger packs which for just one person isnt so good, and even then i know i couldn't survive on £2 per day - I could just about spend only £1 a day on food but the other £1 would be gone in seconds on other essentials. (this is presuming i take out a separate loan for my £9000 of fees, if not i would be in around minus £8000 a year if I'm not counting loans as minus money) any ideas where else I can get money? considering i can't get a job as I am aiming for A*A*A to study maths at uni which will also require a lot of work. and currently I am the "mother" part of my family too so have all the household chores as my mum used to do them all before (she didn't have a job after I was born) any advice on any grants or anything that i could get would be really helpful!

  • Answer:

flat/house share to reduce rent bills buy clothes from cheap outlet stores and charity shops (and only but what you need) buy food from cheap retailers (e.g. 99p shop, £1 shop, lidl, farmfoods...) you should get some assistance from the uni regarding supplies for your dyslexia get a weekend job while you're studying get a job during the holidays to build up some cash
