Financial Aid (FAFSA) help please?
-
I need an advice about my financial aid. I recieved a letter from my university's financial aid office stating that I have approached my 9 quarters (max) at the school and can not receive any more financial aid past the 9 quarters at the school. Please note that I have not recieved aid for all of those 9 quarters, BUT I have been at the school as a transfer student for 9 quarters now....so it's about how many quarters you study at the school and not about how many quarters you recieve the financial aid. So I recieved the letter and I was really disappointed to find out that there's no mroe aid for me, so I logged on to their website and this is what I found out: 1. Entering freshmen are eligible for all types of financial aid for a total of 15 quarters of academic year attendance. 2. Advanced standing transfer students are eligible for all types of financial aid for a total of nine quarters of academic year attendance 3. Students acquiring a second bachelor's degree will have up to six quarters of additional financial aid eligibility for a maximum of 21 quarters of undergraduate attendance. So, as I stated before I am transfer student, so I am an advanced standing student. Indeed, point 2 above states that I am entitled to financial aid within the 9 quarters. BUT...here's the situation...when I applied to FAFSA I made a mistake stating that I am working on 1 bacelors degree only. I am working on 2 bacelors degrees actually, so I am double majoring. Now...should that change the situation and should I be getting financial aid still? I made the correction on my FAFSA last night changing 1 bachelors to 2 bachelors degree, and point 3 states that students working on 2 degrees should still get aid. Could you please let me know if I am right or not? I'm really confused, so I do hope that I still get $$$ because I only have like 2 quarters left at the school to finish my 2nd bacelors degree. Thanks in advance.

Answer:
First of all, double majoring in something is not 2 Bachelor's degrees. It is one degree, with two areas of focas. The "2nd bachelors degree" option on the fafsa is someone who has already earned a 4-year college degree (you have not) and is going back to earn a second. By telling them you already have a Bachelor's degree, you are totally messing up any chance you have of appealing their decision to cut your aid off. Because NO appeals are granted for those with Bachelor's degrees already. You need to contact your fin aid office and tell them you want to appeal their decision to cut your aid because of too many hours and also tell them you messed us up and accidentally said you wanted to earn your second Bachelor's degree (on your fafsa) when you don't. When you do a formal written appeal with the fin aid office they will often times make you write a letter stating why you need to continue fin aid.. Make SURE you state in your letter that you only have XXX quarters left before you graduate and aren't taking any courses that aren't required to graduate. If they deny you, hopefully you already have all your credits for earning your first Bachelor's degree with only 1 major. Don't drop out totally just because you can't double major. If this is the case, simply file the paperwork for graduation. If it is not, you are going to have to pay out of pocket for those last few courses (if you don't have the cash) just to earn your bachelors degree (it will be cheaper and faster to just do 1 major).
