How much does FAFSA pay for your college tuition?
-
Hi Everyone, Please help me! I am so confused right now. I am a senior this year and planning to go to an out of state university. The tuition will double for me since I am an out of state student. I got accepted to the school already. However, the tuition is like $ 20, 000. I know my parents cannot pay for all of the costs. We are low income people. :'[ tear drop. I check online but I still do not understand the information they provided on the website. If my family is really really poor, and I need help paying for my college tuition? How much of it will they paid for? Will they ever pay for all of it? Is there a max. on how much FAFSA provides? What does the school financial office has to do anything with FAFSA? I read something that said I have to fill out the FAFSA, give my college code, then my college will view it and see how much more I need to pay for my tuition and help me? I am so sorry if this sound confusing. I am confused myself about this whole thing. I would really appreciate it if you guys can help me answers these questions.

Answer:
There is no set percentage FAFSA gives out regardless of what you've heard. What FAFSA does count is how much money the school is giving so let's say that your school gives out $5,000 to you in financial aid and scholarships. The FAFSA will review that and then award you aid depending on your family's income. Suppose you are a dependent (majority of college students are) and your parents are only able to afford to pay $6,000 per year, the FAFSA will give you the remaining money in form of Unsubsidized and Subsidized Stafford Loans and Pell Grants and many other (SMART or TEACH or SEG) for which the information is available on their website. My tuition for freshman year was $30,000 and first year I got $11,000 in scholarships and $9,000 in federal money (subsidized, unsubsidized loans, grants, etc) and my mom had to take a $10,000 loan (FPLUS). This year it went up to $32,000 and I got $11,000 in scholarships, $15,000 in government aid and had to pay $6,000 out of my pocket (which we took out another loan for) so I am guessing the more financially troubled your family is, the more they pay. Not to say you should act like you are in trouble to get more money because one of my friends registered as an independent and got 100% tuition to pay for college and fed. gov. found out he was still a dependent and ordered him to pay ALL the money back!! Ouch! He never thought it could happen. He still doesn't have a clue how they found out!! No lie, I'll give you his name and you can google it because it was a top story at that time!

the information you give FAFSA regarding you and/or your parent's tax information is one determining factor of how much money you will receive. also, you need to fill it out as soon as possible because the sooner you fill it out and it is processed, then the more you may receive (according to my guidance counselor). another determining factor is other scholarships that you may receive. there will be a section that asks you if you receive any other scholarships or other sources of income (job, allowance, money from death, savings, etc). That will also determind the amount you get. another way to receive money is to do well on the ACT/SAT (whichever one your school looks at, if not both). If you make a 26 or higher you are more likely to receive a free ride to that school, or receive most of the tuition paid by that school. if you make a 22-25 you will receive (maybe) the average amount of scholarship money that the school gives out. another way to get somre more money is to go on websites such as www.fastweb.com. they have 100's of independent scholarships that you can win (some require so work and thought put into it, and others just require a simple picture or paragraph). I use that site a lot. Check online and see if you can receive grants (that's money you DON'T have to pay back). Also, check with certain employers because they will pay for your schooling as long as you work for them. Some jobs in my city that do that is FedEs, UPS, and Exxon, etc. You just have to research that information. If you have any further questions your best bet is to talk to a guidance counsler at your highschool. Then if you still have questions that she can't answer, call your advisor at the university you are going to attend. Then if you still have questions, call the FAFSA office personally. They are eager to help. Good luck!!

FAFSA doesn't pay for your college. If you've filled it out, in a couple days, they will send you an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and its a number showing how much money you are expected to put toward college each year. The information from the FAFSA is sent to your school and the Dep. of Ed. and when it comes time to pay for college, you will most likely pay the amount that the EFC showed.

It really depends on exactly how much your parents make versus the cost of your schooling, how many children are in college etc. I do believe that some students with huge financial need can get a majority (if not all) covered through governmental grants and loans. In case you don't know, a grant is money you never have to pay back. A loan is money that they give you for the time being but you will have to pay back eventually. Most government loans do not require payment or begin collecting interest until after you graduate or are no longer a full time student. The reason you have to fill out your school code for two reasons. 1) They look up how much the school actually charges for admission, and 2) the school also uses the information you provide for their own financial aid. I went to a private university and got grants from the government as well as from my actual school. My roommate didn't get anything from the government, but got grants from our school anyway. Good Luck.

Well it depends on how much they make and if ur independent or dependent. If you are independent you are most likely about 25 yrs old or sometimes they allow certain other circumstances. If you are dependent, that means you live under their house, and they pay for the things that you have which is most likey what you are since you are still in high school. The best way is to fill out the FAFSA info and contact someone from the Financial Aid office to help you out or go there asap. If you had good grades, you could apply for a scholarship that would give you a free ride or close to that. Or you could be offered government grants that would help you with the cost, or do work-study for the school which would help you pay the bill. Most likely, if you cannot get enough scholarship money, or if FAFSA doesn't help you out to much you will prob have to get a loan in which when you graduate you have to pay back with some interest. It is essential that you get a college degree even if you can't afford it ( like getting a loan) because it will help you out in the end. :)
