What is a college refund check?

College refund check question. What can I do with it?

  • I just got a refund check from my school a few days ago because I applied for too much financial aid. According to my mom, I'm allowed to use that money for books as long as I keep the reciepts, but other than that I have to send it back. Is this true, or is does she have faulty information?

    I used to work in the Financial Aid office as a work-study student and have gotten back plenty of refund checks. If you took out a student loan, you can send the money back if you choose, but you will still have to pay back the amount of the loan that you took out. They will not credit that to your account. If you took out a grant, they money is yours to keep. Either way, it's your to keep and do as you see fit. Just make sure you have all of your supplies and what you do with the rest of it is up to you.

Yes. The reason why they give you a lot of money, is because of living expenses. My GF pocketed about a grand for going to school full time. The classes only costed $600, and books were $400. It was a government grant. We used it to get our son toys' and pay some bills. You can use it for whatever you choose IF you stay in school that is. You can't just drop out and expect to keep all the money ON purpose. THey shouuld have gave you more than enough for books. It's normal... It's basically help & rewards for going to school past High School. Of course people who are rich & can afford it, can't get student grants... Loans are different. I go to school at Media Tech institute ($17,500/yr) and they'll give me about $20,000 ON a student loan. ______________________________________… I make my own music & produce it too. If they loaned you the money you may want to returned used portion after books unless you need it for rent and utilities food etc., if it is free money you are being rewarded for going to school I.E. scholarship, use the money wisely.

Spend the remainder on "Spring-Break" in Daytona, Florida. Write off the 'expense' as an educational learning expense.

I think you can buy anything you want as long as they are school related expenses such as books, cafeteria meals, college clothing etc. Go to you college bookstore and spend away!! Some college bookstores even have furniture, cosmetics and ralph lauren clothing.... =)

it sucks but its true they want there money back if you dont spend it on what intended for you will have to reemburse them out of your pocket

It's loan money, you're sort of free to do with it as you please, but it'd be better to either buy what you need with it or send it back. The less your total balance is running the less you'll owe back plus interest.
