What's a good way to prepare for college?

  • in two and a half years, i will be the first in my main family to go to college. i already have colleges in mind such as the university of michigan ann-arbor, clard atlanta, howard university, the arts institute of chicago, the school of arts in chicago, and/or maybe julliard. I want to be an actress (which you don't really need a degree), journalist, writer, fashion designer (i don't want to take it in college b/c is it a hard industry to get ino, but i'll do if i become an actress), wedding planner, real estate agent, or music teacher (or just major in music composition and theory). out of all of these, i want to go to college for at least two of them. i am in 10 grade and i want to get started now. since nobody in my close family that i see often has been to an on-campus university or college, i don't think they know too much. i really want to get started, but my mom is taking it too lightly...what should i do? if you have any other good universities (east coast-south, please list)

Talk to your favorite teacher about college and advice about attending college. Also, the colleges have individuals who are familiar with first in the family to attend college students. In fact, now is the perfect time to prepare for college including looking for scholarships. I noticed that you have listed some pretty competitive schools, so grades, test scores, volunteer work, and activities are important. Most schools take a hollistic approach to college admissions.

To get into college, you want the best grades you can get (of course), and after-school activities make you stand out against other people. It does not matter what school you get into, they will all teach you physics, journalism, whatever your major is. State schools are good because of the many majors they offer and the large number of people they accept. To prepare for college financially, look at the scholarships offered, and fill out the financial aid papers when you apply for the school. To prepare for college mentally, you need to learn how to schedule! Just go to your classes, ask for tutoring help when you need it, and schedule time every day to study on your own. If you have a guidance counselor at the school, ask them for preparation help too. Good luck.

Go and talk with your school counselor. He or she will know what classes you need to prepare for college. They also will be able to advise you what you will need to do to obtain financial aid. If you are a stellar student, you may even get some scholarships. I live in Michigan and U of M is a great school, but very expensive. The Art Institute in Chicago is also a good school. Our daughter is currently going to the Art Institute at Pittsburgh as she wants to be a game art designer (you know, video games). They also have a great program there for interior design, clothing design, etc. As soon as you decide what you want to major in, just start searching on line for colleges that specialize in your choosen field. You seem to be full of ideas, but the main thing you have to do right now is keep your marks UP. It's getting harder and harder to get into university.
