Will the recession make college tuition costs go down?

Where does college Tuition go EXACTLY?

  • i have been going online and searching for the answer to my question only to find very vague answers, or explanations of why the cost is rising. This is not the information i am looking for, i am not interested in why it costs more now, what i want to know is what is the distribution of my money. Of the money i pay the college for tuition (obviously not including room and board or food) go? if i pay them 7000 dollars for a year, approximately how much goes to paying professors? to janitors? to paying electric bill? to paying for computers? to paying for sports equipment? This is what i want to know. I am both sincerely curious as it is a LOT of money that i cant afford. I have been applying for scholarships and haven't gotten any, and its not that i don't work hard... there just doesn't seem to be much for me (yeah i know, if i look harder i will find some....and i am still looking) It irritates me that i see so many scholarships for sports, or requiring memberships in a sports team, or scholarships only for particular races (which is racist no matter how you look at it). Financial aid isn't of much help either, as my parents make a little too much money for me to get much financial aid. Without going too far into it, i will say that my parents aren't foolish with their money, and with their expenses they cant afford to put me through college. Yes i know i can get loans, but financially i don't want to be in the situation where i NEED to take a loan, and i hate the idea of owing so much money, especially if you need to pay additional interest. Any way, the second reason i want to know where the money is going is probably so i can have something to be mad at. Seems like they HAVE to be wasting money somewhere. (yahoo answers helper thingy.....hmm...it looks like you have a lot of punctuation, well guess what? I LOVE punctuation. here, look, ".,,'?!!!!?<?>!!":!"!?>!>! that was fun. That made me happy. That was like cocaine, i snort punctuation, i sprinkle it on my ice cream, so shut up. )...

  • Answer:

Some schools will tell you exactly where a portion of that money is going (they list some fees out like for the library, computer labs, wellness centers etc....). However, your always going to have a portion of that money for tuition that does not list specific places of where it is going. This is because that money just goes into a large pool and thats where they pay the actual bills for the school (cause ya know they do gotta pay water, electric, cable, phone, internet etc as well) and to pay the teachers and other staff of the school. So for most of those things there is not an actual amount they take from everyone's tuition specifically they just pool it all together and get everything paid for. Why would it matter if a school listed out exactly where every penny of your tuition went to anyways? You wouldn't be able to go to the school and go oh I don't use the library so I'm not going to pay that fee or my teacher sucked so don't want to pay them. No matter what you have to pay it or you don't go to that school. If your having a hard time affording to go to college then find a cheaper school until you can get the money together for a better college.

I also love punctuation. p!u;n,c/tuation!!!! Yahoo helper answers thingie loves me. Usually, the tuition and fees you pay only actually pay a part of the costs of educating you. The rest is paid for either via state support (if you're an in-state student at a state uni) or else via the uni's own funding sources (alumni, research grants, investments, etc.) So oddly enough, although your education does cost you a lot, it actually costs a lot more than what you're paying. I'm not talking direct instructional costs, but about *everything* that goes into your education - building, lights, computer labs, the cool new gym on campus, etc. How all that splits up depends on the university, but in general, if the cost is, say, $35,000 per year, you can assume that about $15,000 goes to direct instructional costs, about $11,000 goes to what I might call "other education related costs", and the rest goes to "etc." Direct educational costs are those related to what's happening directly in your classroom. So that's faculty salaries, the tech used in the class, etc. Other education related costs are things like admissions, your advisors, and so on. The "etc." are things like research, student health services, the free bus system that your uni has, the cool coffee shop on campus, etc.

Hey, there are many programs out there where you can make money, you just have to find the right one for you. My friend was in the same situation, nothing worked for him until he came across this little program. He's been having good success with it, maybe this is something which could work for you. Good Luck

Welcome to the real world. You are not the only one in the exact same situation. It seems that the middle class gets whomped no matter how you look at it. The rich don't sweat the cost; the poor don't have to shoulder the cost. But, as to your question, it depends on the school. If a school focuses heavily on sports, it would stand to reason that it budgets more to their sports program than a school that focuses on the fine arts. An Ivy League school may spend more dollars on teachers than your local university, but in fact, your local university may spend a greater percentage of its budget on teachers than an Ivy League school does. Your university should have public financial statements/reports available for your perusal. It should not be impossible to figure out the information you're interested in.
