How do you support yourself while in nursing school?

How to pay for school and move out?

  • I'm a 20 year old transferring to a local university in the fall for their nursing program, which I hope to finish in 2.5 years. My mom was going to completely support me financially for me to future my program so that I won't have to take out a loan and get in debt, etc. Well, my mom and I recently had a falling out, and she's pretty much telling me to GTFO and to forget about helping me financially with school. Now I'm looking for a way to pay for school and move out. I would like to move out within 6 months, so hopefully by the end of this year at the latest. I know these are daunting tasks, so I was hoping someone can shed some insight. Here are some more info to consider: 1) I don't have my own car. 2) I currently only have a summer job that pays $8 per hour. I do it currently every hour I can get though. I clock more than 30 hours per week since I started, and will soon be clocking for more than 40 hours per week once my summer classes end. The university I'm transferring to starts classes on 8/23, so I might not be able to work after that. 3) I've never had a credit card, so I have absolutely 0 credit history. I've recently applied for a card to build history with, but I haven't heard back yet. I'm willing to work hard to pay for school and move out on my own, since reconciling with my mom seems futile. I'm thinking of letting my prospective school know my situation soon to see if they can get me a federal direct loan to help pay for school, and maybe another loan for housing near the school so I won't have to drive and that I can move out of the house. What else can I do though? I need a game plan. Any help anyone can offer will be much appreciated.

  • Answer:

You're 20 years old. You've been living at home. You have no car & no credit. Call the financial aid office at the school and ask them if there's any help available. At this late date, I'm pretty sure they won't be able to help you. Suck it up. Apologize and tell your mom WHATEVER you have to in order to "fix things." Good Luck
