How do you decide what degree to get?
-
I am a 25 yr old single mother and I have my G.E.D. but haven't gone to college. Today almost any job that would pay a decent wage to live on you have to have some kind of degree or some college credit. I have no idea what I want to do. There are so many interesting things. I feel like I don't have a lot of time (or money) to be wasting trying to figure out what to do. I want to get a good job so I am able to send my daughter to a decent school ( not public). I am good at math and like science but it's been about 8 years since I've been in school and am a little discouraged.

Because you have a GED and I'm sure you haven't taken the SAT tests, I like the idea of you starting at a community college. Community colleges have less stringent admissions requirements than some four year schools do, and they don't usually require the SAT. Another nice thing is that they tend to be fairly low cost, and you'll get a degree - an Associates - in two years or less. They give a lot of bang for the buck. Once you get your Associates, so long as you fulfill certain requirements, you can go on for your Bachelor's and enter the BA program as a Junior - all your credits will transfer. Talk to the admissions office at your local community college for details on how to do this. Also, depending on the program you enter, you may be able to get a very, very nice job right out of your Associates. You can then either just keep working, or work there while you get your BA part-time. And a lot of employers will pay for your schooling once you're working there. This can be a great deal. The best jobs (by "best" I mean decent pay, respected and important work, and lots of employer demand) I've seen people get out of an Associate's programs are in nursing, medical technology, administrative assistant, and computer technical fields. If you majored in one of these subjects (with your love of math and science, some of these might be perfect), you'd most likely get a job right out of school, at a decent salary. One thing you'll notice at a community college is that there are people of all ages there. There will be people just like you - young mothers who left highschool early, and who are looking for a way to better themselves. In fact, in the classes I tought at a 2-year, private school, the vast majority of my students were over age 21.

The whole point of getting a degree is to get the job that you actually love doing and not getting stuck in some factory job. So decide what it is you want to do in life and get a degree in that

Go to: www.livecareer.com Take their test and see what career you are suited for and then pursue your dream. This will aid you because there is nothing worse than having to go to a job that you don't like every day. It is wonderful to go to a job that you love -- it doesn't seem like work then. Remember there are a lot of on-line colleges now that will allow you to go to school and still work. My daughter is doing this and is receiving financial aid (Pell Grant -- don't have to repay, and other student loans that you don't have to repay until you graduate). These schools are accredited and recognized world wide. You are still so young -- don't get too discouraged -- the sky is the limit!!

This best advice I can give you is this to get all of your general classes at a community college before transfering those credits to a university if you wish a B.S. or B.A. You will be tested when you enter the community college and placed in the correct Math and English classes to prepare you for your college career. You can take classes that are of interest to you to get an idea of the actual work required in that field.

Seems to me everyone has got good points, but first decide how many years of college do you want to do. As if you want to pursue your career in degree such as BS or BA you will have to go to college for at least 4 yrs or may be more. But if you just want to get certify on one subject than best bet will be community college. They will offer 2 kind of degrees, one AA and second will be AS. Now if you got an AA, with that you can continue your education further at higher University with any Major field you like. But with AS, they will tell you pick the field and you will be certify in that field. Such colleges like ITT (IIT) or few Technical colleges will offer degrees in that. Now this AS degree will not let you go to University for higher education. So, I would suggest to go to community college and talk to one of those advisor. They are really helpful, they will guide you with your interest and background knowledge. And if you still need further assistance, I would suggest research at your local library about this degrees and it will help you out.

First you have to decide what your best subject is, what you are really good at, what you really like doing, what you are most likely to succeed at. Then you must go and see a career counsellor. You do not need a degree to succeed in life but you need training. Most libraries will be able to help you or tell you where to go. Trying to figure out what you want to do is not a waste of time you need to give it careful thought. Or you can do it the reverse way. Find out where the skill shortages are. For instance, in Britain, there is a shortage of dentists and opticians so if you had no particular idea of what you wanted to do, you could study for that but be careful with this method as you do not want to end up doing a job you hate for the rest of your life.
