What do I do with a degree in Biology and pre-med?

Marine biology with a biology degree?

  • Hi, I'm hoping to do a biology degree at university, but eventually I might like to go into marine biology. How hard would it be to go into marine biology with just a biology degree? What extra courses and training would I need to get? What kind of jobs could I do and what could I do? Quite a few questions sorry, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. :)

  • Answer:

Getting a general degree in biology could be wise since jobs in marine biology are limited but very attractive. If you do choose to go into marine biology, you could either seek out a job as a bachelor's level marine biologist, perhaps, go on to graduate school in marine biology and earn a master's or Ph.D. Currently supply and demand factors may make it easier to get a job in some other area of biology such as cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, etc. You might also consider limnology as a career as well. It is not as well known as marine biology, but freshwater aquatic life deserves our attention as well as sea life. I would suggest taking courses in a wide variety of biological sciences and then deciding what you want to pursue as a career.
